Introduction

Pole dance (also known as pole sport) is a sport that showcases a variety of movements on a pole.

It combines dance and gymnastics, and relies on a vertical pole called a pole to perform a variety of acrobatic moves. There are several theories about the origins of pole dancing, one of which is that it originates from the traditional Indian sport of Mallakhamb.

Mallakhamb is the first recorded sport using a vertical pole, featuring movements that combine yoga and acrobatics on a wooden pole.

Sports similar to pole dancing exist not only in India but also in China, Africa, and Europe.

The modern form of pole dancing originated in the 1950s in the United States, where it was performed on poles set up in circus tents. It later evolved into strip dancing and gained immense popularity in clubs.

However, since the 1990s, it has evolved into both an art and a sport, attracting a wider range of age groups. Competitions began to be held regionally and internationally, and in 2017, it was recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee under the new name of 'pole sports', and efforts are continuing to become an official Olympic event.

Pole dance has several sub-disciplines, with pole artistic, pole sport, and pole exotic being the three most well-known.

Pole artistic emphasizes artistry and narrative choreography, while pole sport focuses on performing acrobatic movements.

Pole exotic is most similar to earlier forms of pole dancing, incorporating more floor-level choreography and high heels.

Pole dance's basic movements include spinning, climbing, leg-only hanging, and horizontal hanging. These movements are performed without falling from the pole, utilizing the friction of the entire body.

Pole dancing also requires full-body strength and flexi.
